One Thousand Year Dawn

For our first public conversation at Prospect Art, we invited Irish artist John Gerrard to discuss ONE THOUSAND YEAR DAWN (MARCEL), the first work in his professional career. The conversation tracks his historical practice as a digital artist and his thoughts on NFT's. John has been making work since the early 2000s and is included in many significant exhibitions and collections throughout the world, such as the Hirschhorn Museum, the Museum of Contemporary art in Australia, the Tate, LACMA, and Desert X. John is known for digital-based works that deceptively look like film or video. His works are virtual worlds, built using real-time computer graphics, technology developed by the military, and used extensively in the gaming industry.

We focused our conversation on John's piece ONE THOUSAND YEAR DAWN (MARCEL) 2005 to hear about John's experience making work as a digital artist leading into the current art world craze regarding NFTs. He'll provide background for his piece WESTERN FLAG (SPINDLETOP, TEXAS) 2017 and discuss WESTERN FLAG NFT. The conversation ends with STREAM (SICHUAN) 2018, a project that explores the world of crypto mining.
