This limited edition print originates from vinyl ink and coffee grounds on watercolor paper, documenting *Point of Turn*, a vibratory sound work by Alan Nakagawa. Premiered at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in May 2023, the piece, commissioned by Prospect Art, explores personal stories of individuals leaving organized religion. Inspired by 10CC's 1970s hit *I’m Not In Love*, Nakagawa collaborated with vocalists Evelyn Davis and Steven Speciale to craft a soundscape that stretches one verse and chorus into a 30-minute composition, interwoven with personal reasons for leaving religion. The performance utilized balloons and earplugs, allowing the audience to physically experience soundwaves, drawing on techniques from the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Alan Nakagawa is an interdisciplinary artist known for his archiving tendencies, working primarily with sound and often collaborating with communities to explore their histories. His practice includes creating *Invisible Architecture* experiences, blending the acoustics of historic sites to recontextualize these places through contemporary sound. He has served as an artist-in-residence at institutions such as Kaya Press at the University of Southern California and the Gerth Archives at California State University Dominguez Hills, where he worked on collections related to the Civil Liberties Act of 1988. His first book, *A.I.R.Head: Anatomy of an Artist in Residence*, was published in 2023. Nakagawa’s projects include a sound portrait of Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi and a series of semi-autobiographical sound-architecture works, including *Peace Resonance: Hiroshima/Wendover* and *Conical Sound: Antoni Gaudi and Simon Rodia*. He has been awarded two Art Matters grants, a City of Los Angeles Artist Fellowship, and a California Community Foundation Mid-Career Artist Fellowship, and he co-founded the nonprofit arts collective Collage Ensemble Inc.
